The most common causes of bad breath are tobacco use, poor oral hygiene, gum disease and dry mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by medications, ageing, excess tobacco and alcohol use and radiation treatment. In addition, certain foods and excess stomach acid and reflux can contribute to the problem as well as respiratory infetions, sinusitis and diabetes.
The most effective remedy/prevention is regular cleanings, brushing and flossing and avoiding certain foods (such as garlic, onion, etc) as well as avoiding tobacco products. Another helpful aid that is often neglected is cleaning your tongue! The use of a toothbrush or tongue scraper can greatly reduce the build-up of bacteria in the crevices of the tongue..this can seem a bit "gross" to some at first but it can make a huge difference.
Finally, the use of rinses, mints, Altoids and candy can be helpful but often only mask bad odors. Of course we suggest the use of alcohol-free and sugar-free options. The best mouth rinses are those that contain Chlorine DIoxide but these are not as "mainstream" as the other household names. The most common brand names are OxyFresh, CloSYs and Therabreath.

Although tongue and lip piercings are a popular trend, did you know that they can put you at risk for a number of health issues. Such as: chipped teeth, recessed gums and nerve damage. Also, food and bacteria trapped in the piercing can cause bad breath and infection.
